Your Practical Guide To An Alkaline Body


Lately, a lot of fitness blogs are talking about alkaline and acidic state of our body. Wonder why? To put very simply, a slightly alkaline state is considered optimum for all of our body functions, whereas an acidic state gives way to illnesses and serious problems. As chemistry driven as it sounds, it is rather simple to strike a balanced equation. Let's read on then...

Alkaline state is essential for our health and general well-being; not just physical but also emotional. Throughout the day, our body experiences different ph values and at any time, this value can differ for different body parts. But stating generally, a good ph value is considered at and about 7.36. There is a lot of information in depth about this topic across the internet and in books. So, I am going to keep it short and share some easy to remember tips that we can all follow everyday without going crazy: 

Tip: 70:30- Seventy percent of our day's diet should comprise of alkaline foods and thirty percent of acidic ones (yes, that's imp too). 

Simple chart to follow as per

Acidic: Meat, poultry, fish, dairy, eggs, grains and alcohol.
Neutral: Natural fats, starches and sugars.
Alkaline: Fruits, nuts, legumes and vegetables.

It goes without saying that alcohol is acidic and more than an occasional toast, its better to avoid it. So, is anything sugary. 

Water: Drink atleast 8-10 glasses of water and balance the regular water with some specially alkalised water. Couple of glasses can be infused water with cucumber and lemons for example. 

Tip: Before going to bed, infuse 2 slices of lemon and 3 slices cucumber in purified water and leave it overnight. Let this be your first drink in the morning when you wake up.

Caffeine: We all love our tea and coffee but let's try and limit it to not more than 1- 2 cups. Try some healthier caffeine-free infusions instead. And sugary energy drinks, colas are a big no. 

Move it: Body needs it! Exercising couple of times a week for atleast 30 minutes is essential. Besides, that post workout glow is the best form of oxygen facial. And its for free. 

Greens: Not a tough guess, greens are always the right choice. But understandably, it is not possible to ensure on everyday basis that we are getting enough of it for lunch and dinner. What I like to do on many mornings is to have Dr. Greger's recommended veggie smoothie. I literally pull out any greens and veggies in my fridge and put them in a blender with some peppercorns, a tomato, ginger and lemon. Doing this, fills me up till lunch and for the rest of the day, even if I can't get a healthy meal, it is not as bad. 

Other than what you eat and drink, an extremely important way if not the most, is to stay happy and stress-free. Worry, anger, anxiety cause our body to be more acidic and are responsible for a lot of stomach problems, which in turn cause many other body issues including acid reflux. 

Practising yoga and occasional meditation in any form is really helpful. I am not the most patient person, so sometimes, I just listen to meditating music and mantras as I am doing other chores and it instantly pacifies me. Listening to motivating and spiritual podcasts is also one of my go-to ways of calming a heated head.
